This interview is one of a series with 5 different Beachbody Coaches (fitness enthusiasts authorized to sell products like P90x, Insanity, Asylum, etc.). Enjoy the story!
What did I know about Kirk before this interview? Kirk is obsessed with superheroes & Star Wars. Now, on to the interview.
Why did you become a Beachbody coach?
I had tremendous results from my use of P90X and Power 90, I was already telling everyone I knew to try the programs. I was often in touch with people who were using the program and offering advice and recommendations. Once I discovered I can earn income doing what I had loved, it was a no brainier. Coaching was a natural progression.
How/why did you become an obstacle racer?
After losing 60lbs, looking good became superficial, it became easy to backslide. I found that training for something other than “to get in shape” was a must. When I discovered OCR, I was hooked. It provided me with something to train for other than appearance.
If you could recommend only one Beachbody program for fitness training, what would it be?
P90X. Anybody who wants to become a fitness trainer should use this program. I often tell people this work out is the Harvard of fitness. Not only will you get fit, but you gain a tremendous amount of knowledge about exercise, nutrition and the body.
What else do you do in addition to Beachbody programs for OCR training?
I love pull ups and calisthenics. At least 3 workouts a week involve a variety of pull ups. My goal is to be able to hold the human flag move by the end of the summer.
What is your best OCR memory?
My first Spartan Sprint I completed the entire course with no Burpees. That was my goal going in, and I crushed it.
What is the worst thing that happened to you during an OCR?
2012 Super in NJ, water slide near the end of the course had a giant rock dead center of the slide that crushed me in my coccyx as I went down. I couldn’t sit comfortably for 2 weeks because of that.
Favorite obstacle?
I love them all but one…
Least favorite obstacle?
Wall traverse. I’ve seen so many people cheat on this obstacle.
Would you rather do an OCR in 80 degrees or 30 degrees?
80 degrees. I hate the cold.
Yoga: yes or no?
Yes, confession, I don’t do yoga as much as I should.
Favorite Beachbody trainer?
Tony Horton
Tony Horton: mute him or enjoy his banter?
At this point in my P90X journey, mute him.
Favorite example of someone you have helped by being a Beachbody coach?
I had a client drop 60lbs in 90 days with P90X and Shakeology. He completely changed his life. Amazing and inspirational to see his transformation.
